Michael's journey to
independence.

Michael T.
SIL Participant · Adelaide, SA · 3 years with Vision and Care

When Michael first came to Vision and Care, he was living in a busy group home that didn't suit his needs. He was anxious, had limited independence, and needed significant support for daily tasks. His goal was simple — he wanted to cook his own meals and catch the bus by himself.

Over the first six months in his SIL placement, Michael's support team worked with him on structured routines, building skills one step at a time. His support workers were consistent — the same faces every week — so Michael could build the trust he needed to try new things.

By month eight, Michael was preparing three meals a week independently. By month twelve, he was taking public transport to a local café every Saturday. He also joined our Day Care programme once a week, where he discovered a passion for gardening.
